Trigger Warning Obvi

From the age of ten, my mother drilled the following steps into my head: get a job, find a partner, pay off your car, buy a house, then you can think about having children.

I went about my checklist meticulously.

The only thing I was unsure of was the timing. In my situation, the timing was never right.

Shortly after arriving in New Zealand with my partner in tow, we purchased a cheap but reliable used car with cash, and shortly afterward, we both secured jobs. The next obstacle was the house situation, and since we were so new to the country, we had no chance of getting a mortgage, so we built a tiny house.

But once we moved into the tiny house we had built, we knew there was no room for a baby. It took us 5 years to save while living tiny so that we could build a house with a spare room. We broke ground in 2020 and once the house was complete; we were still amid a pandemic.

On paper, we were ready to start a family, but like many others, the pandemic put things into perspective, and we instead opted to put that off to start a business together in 2021. We both felt we should give the business our full attention for a few months, but I had already begun to feel the pressure.
